How to Talk About Sex in an Arranged Marriage: Scripts

The short answer

Talk before you touch. In the IHDS survey, 69% of Indian women had met their husband on the wedding day or shortly before (IHDS, 2004-05), so nobody starts this fluent. Open with one honest sentence about nerves, agree out loud that either of you can say no, and bring products in last. The words, in English and Hinglish, are below.

Why is talking about sex so hard in an arranged marriage?

Because the two of you skipped the years in which most people learn each other's vocabulary. The IHDS found that fewer than 5% of women in its sample chose their husbands independent of their parents, and that 69% met theirs on or just before the wedding day, while 62% still felt their wishes counted in who was picked (IHDS, 2004-05). Two strangers with a marriage certificate is the normal starting position, not a failure. One rule sits above every script here: the WHO defines sexual health as needing experiences "free of coercion, discrimination and violence" (WHO). A no is a complete answer inside a marriage too, which is the whole of consent after the wedding.

What do you say on the first night?

Something small and true, ideally before the night itself. The first sentence does not have to be about sex at all; it only has to establish that the two of you are allowed to discuss it. If you want to know what the night tends to look like in practice, that is covered in the wedding-night guide and in सुहागरात की हिंदी गाइड. The physical half of that night, including when the first kiss tends to land, sits on the first-kiss page.

Script 1, on the phone before the wedding

"I'd rather we talk about the awkward stuff now than guess on the night. Can I ask what you're nervous about?"

"Suno, shaadi se pehle hi ek baat clear kar lete hain, matlab I don't want us to be guessing on the first night. Tum kis cheez ko lekar nervous ho?"

Script 2, when you are both exhausted

"Honestly, I'm tired and a bit nervous. Can we just sleep tonight and figure the rest out slowly?"

"Sach mein, main thak gayi hoon aur thoda nervous bhi. Aaj bas so jaate hain na, baaki sab dheere dheere." (thak gaya hoon if you are the husband)

How do you say you want more, or that you want to wait?

Name the want, then hand over the choice in the same breath. That second half is what keeps it an invitation. Wives ask this on Quora constantly and get told to hint; hinting is how couples spend six months misreading each other. Husbands get the opposite problem, so the script below is built to carry no pressure at all.

Script 3, when you want more

"I like being close to you and I want more of it. Is tonight okay, or would you rather another night?"

"Mujhe tumhare paas rehna achha lagta hai aur I want more of that. Aaj raat theek hai, ya kisi aur din?"

Script 4, when your spouse is unsure

"No pressure from my side, ever. Tell me what feels okay and what doesn't, and I'll follow that."

"Meri taraf se koi pressure nahi hai, kabhi bhi. Jo theek lage woh batao, jo na lage woh bhi, main wahi follow karunga."

What do you say when sex hurts?

Say it at the time, not three weeks later. Brook puts the baseline flatly: "sex is never supposed to be painful, whether it's the first time or the 100th", and adds that "lube can help reduce friction" (Brook). Dryness is often just not being aroused yet, and the NHS advice is water-based lubricant before sex (NHS). Frequent or severe pain is a reason to see an obstetrician-gynaecologist (ACOG), as is a vagina that tightens whenever something is inserted, which the NHS calls vaginismus and says is treatable (NHS).

Script 5, after it hurt

"It hurt last time and I don't want to pretend it didn't. Can we slow down, use some lube, and if it keeps hurting, see a doctor together?"

"Last time dard hua tha aur main pretend nahi karna chahti. Thoda slow karte hain, lube use karte hain, aur agar phir bhi dard ho toh saath mein doctor ke paas chalte hain?"

How do you bring a game or a massager into the room?

Order something low-stakes, say what it is before it arrives, and give your spouse an easy out. You would not be the first: in a 2024 study of 2,071 Indian adults aged 18 to 44, 40.56% reported using intimate products in solo and partnered sex, and the worries people named were inferiority, insecurity and judgement rather than the products themselves (Lancet Reg Health Southeast Asia, 2024). Start with cards, not circuitry. The Couples Quiz Game (₹549) asks 200 questions about each other and stays PG-13; Naughty Cards (₹324.50) is the step after, with four intensity levels you can stop at. Devices come later, and our first-night kit guide covers what else goes in the suitcase.

Script 6, the order you already placed

"I ordered something small for us, a card game, not a device. Want to open it together on Sunday and decide if we even like it?"

"Maine humare liye ek chhoti si cheez order ki hai, matlab ek card game, koi device nahi. Sunday ko saath mein kholein, aur phir decide karein ki pasand aaya ya nahi?"

When should you talk to a doctor instead?

When something keeps hurting, when erections or orgasm become a source of dread, or when one of you is carrying real distress about any of it. India's clinical practice guideline for sexual dysfunction opens by saying "the first step in the treatment of any sexual dysfunction is sex education/psychoeducation", and that a partner should be involved early (Indian J Psychiatry, 2017). A gynaecologist, a urologist or a psychiatrist working in sexual health are all reasonable first doors, and going together is the point.

Key takeaways

  • Most Indian spouses meet days before the wedding, so neither of you is behind anyone.
  • Every line here leaves the other person a no. Never coax, convince or wear someone down.
  • Pain is information, not something to sit through. Slow down, add lubricant, then see a doctor.
  • Products come last and arrive as a card game, opened together, with an easy way to say no.

Frequently asked questions

What do you say when family starts asking about the first night or a baby?

One line, repeated, works better than an explanation: "We're happy and settling in at our own pace." In Hinglish, "Hum khush hain, apne hisaab se settle ho rahe hain." Nobody in an arranged marriage owes relatives a timeline, and a calm repeat ends the subject faster than an argument.

How do you start if you are too shy to say the word sex out loud?

Start with nerves instead of sex. "Can I ask what you're nervous about?" gets a newly married couple further than any direct question, and it works over text the week before the wedding. Writing it down is also allowed; shy spouses often find the first honest sentence easier to type.

Is it normal for an arranged-marriage couple to wait weeks before having sex?

Yes, and it is common. Couples who met days before the wedding often spend the first weeks talking, sharing a bed and nothing else. There is no clinical clock on this. What matters is that the pace is agreed between the two of you rather than assumed by one.

How do you suggest a massager without your spouse hearing it as a complaint?

Frame it as an addition, never a verdict. Say you read about it and are curious, offer to open the box together, and make clear that returning it unopened is fine. If you searched "for wife", the same rule applies in reverse: she gets to say no, and the conversation continues anyway.
