How to Get Rid of a Hickey Fast (and What Won't Work)
Short answer: A hickey is a bruise, so nothing makes it vanish overnight. What helps: a cold compress in the first hour or day to limit the spread, then warm compresses from about day 2 to clear the trapped blood faster. Most hickeys fade in a few days to two weeks. Until then, a colour-correcting concealer or a collar does more than any hack. Skip toothpaste, coins and spoons.
If you are reading this the night before office, a cousin's mehendi or a lunch with your parents, breathe. You have options, and the fastest one is about 30 seconds of good concealer.

What a hickey is
A hickey is a small bruise. Suction or a love bite breaks tiny blood vessels under the skin, and the blood that leaks out shows through as a red, then purple, mark. Your body clears it the same way it clears any bruise, which is why it goes from red to purple to greenish yellow before it fades. On deeper skin tones it can look darker brown or purple rather than red.
The first hour: go cold
If you catch it early, cold helps most. Wrap ice or a bag of frozen peas in a thin cloth and hold it on the mark for up to 15 minutes. Never put ice directly on skin. A steel spoon from the freezer works too if you wrap it, and that is the only version of the "spoon trick" worth trying.
WebMD and a dermatologist quoted by GoodRx both suggest cold for the first one to two days, a few times a day. Cleveland Clinic's view is that cold only really helps in the first minutes after the hickey forms. Doctors genuinely differ here, so treat cold as a first-day tool, not the main fix.
Day 1 to 2: cold if swollen, then switch
- Keep up short cold sessions if the mark is swollen or tender.
- Do not rub, scrub or massage hard. That breaks more vessels and can make it bigger.
Day 3 onwards: go warm
Once the swelling has settled, usually from about 48 hours, switch to warm. Warmth increases blood flow, which helps your body clear the trapped blood. Heat water until it is warm enough to keep a finger in comfortably, not boiling. Soak a clean washcloth, wring it out and hold it on the hickey until it cools, then repeat. Cleveland Clinic suggests doing this for 15 to 20 minutes, up to four times a day. A steel katori of warm water and two washcloths is all the kit you need.
Some people also use creams with arnica, vitamin C or vitamin K on bruises. The evidence for these is limited, and you should skip arnica if you take blood thinners. Ask a pharmacist before trying any of them.
How long does a hickey last?
Usually from a few days to about two weeks, depending on how hard the suction was and how quickly your body heals. A light pink mark can be gone in three or four days. A deep purple one can take the full two weeks. You cannot make it disappear "in 5 minutes" or "by tomorrow", whatever the videos say, but warm compresses and leaving it alone help it fade sooner.
How to cover a hickey for work or a family function
- Colour-correct first. Green corrector cancels a fresh red hickey. Peach or orange corrector cancels purple or brown, and works best on medium and deep Indian skin tones.
- Then concealer in your exact shade, patted on with a finger, not rubbed. Set it with a little powder so it does not transfer onto your collar.
- Let clothes do the rest. A collared shirt, a mandarin-collar kurta, a high-neck blouse, a light scarf or a well-placed dupatta. Hair down helps if the mark is behind the ear.
- Do not overdo it. A small, slightly visible mark under good concealer draws less attention than a thick, cakey patch. Nobody is inspecting your neck as closely as you are.
Hacks to skip
- Toothpaste. It does nothing for a bruise and can irritate or burn the skin. Cleveland Clinic specifically advises against it.
- Scraping with a coin or comb. Rubbing or scraping a bruise damages more blood vessels and the skin on top. It can make the mark larger or leave a rash.
- A spoon from the freezer, unwrapped. Cold is fine. Bare frozen metal on skin is not.
- Banana peel, aloe, alcohol rub. No good evidence. Harmless at best, irritating at worst.
- Heat right away. On a brand-new hickey, warmth can increase the spread. Save it for after the first day or two.
Next time: gentler
A hickey is about suction, not passion. A lighter touch, shorter pulls and kissing somewhere a collar covers anyway will save you the concealer. Our guide on how to give a hickey without pain covers how to keep it light and where to place it, and how to kiss someone for the first time is a good refresher on reading your partner. If neck kisses tend to get out of hand, a slow massage with a good oil is a different kind of fun: see massage oils for couples.
When to see a doctor
A hickey on its own is harmless. See a doctor if a mark does not fade after two weeks, if you get bruises easily without a clear reason, if the area is very painful, hot or swollen, or if you notice a lump. Get urgent medical help for trouble breathing or swallowing, severe neck pain, or sudden weakness, numbness, dizziness or vision changes after a neck injury of any kind.

FAQ
How do you get rid of a hickey fast?
Use a wrapped cold compress for up to 15 minutes in the first hour or day, then switch to warm compresses from about day 2 to help the trapped blood clear. Nothing erases a hickey instantly, so cover it with colour corrector and concealer in the meantime.
Can you get rid of a hickey overnight?
No. A hickey is a bruise, and no method makes a bruise disappear overnight. Cold the first night can limit how big it gets, and a peach or green corrector under concealer can hide it by morning.
Does toothpaste get rid of a hickey?
No. There is no evidence toothpaste helps a bruise, and it can irritate or burn your skin. Cleveland Clinic advises against it.
Do the spoon and coin tricks work for a hickey?
A cold spoon wrapped in cloth works the same as any cold compress in the first hours. Scraping with a coin or comb does not work and can damage the skin and make the bruise bigger.
How long does a hickey last?
Usually a few days to about two weeks, depending on how deep it is. Warm compresses after the first day or two and leaving it alone help it fade sooner.
When should I see a doctor about a hickey?
See a doctor if the mark lasts more than two weeks, you bruise easily without reason, or the area becomes very painful, hot or swollen. Get urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, severe neck pain, or sudden weakness or numbness.
